Papers, ca. 1890-1957.

Correspondence; financial records; radio broadcast transcripts; manuscript and published articles; newsclippings; and notebooks of Ernest Newman. The notebooks make up the bulk of the collection and cover a wide range of musical topics as well as some non-musical ones. Volumes concentrating on Liszt and Wagner predominate: the series includes the "Wagner Journals," a chronicle of Wagner's daily activities from 1868 to 1882 that was compiled by Newman, probably to assist him in writing Wagner as man and artist (New York: A.A. Knopf, 1924) and The life of Richard Wagner (New York: A.A. Knopf, 1933-1946). Handwritten, and employing a large number of abbreviations, the notebooks are often difficult to decipher. Newsclippings are contained on eight reels of microfilm. Five reels contain the 39 volumes of newspaper clippings of Newman's music criticism from 1905 to 1959. Another two reels are entitled Clippings about Newman 1905-1963 and undated; while this title is largely correct, the reels also include clippings by Newman as well as clippings by other authors on general musical topics. These seven reels are arranged chronologically with undated material at the start of the series. The eighth reel contains loose newspaper and magazine clippings of Newman articles (1901-1959) arranged alphabetically by name of publication. At the end of the reel, there are a small number of clippings about Newman.

7.65 cubic feet (23 boxes)8 reels of microfilm.
